Things I love to hear Samuel say...

This past week we had a family reunion here in Houston. It was great to see the whole family. On Saturday morning we all went to the temple to get an extended family picture. Our assignment was to pick up the donuts and kolaches on the way. Because Mary and Lizzie were in our car I put the boxes of donuts in the trunk of the car. When I got back into the car here is the conversation I had with Samuel:

Samuel - I want tem.
Joseph - What do you want?
Samuel - Donut, I want tem.
Joseph - Where do you want them?
Samuel - I need tem in the Happy Car
Joseph - Why do you want them in the car?
Samuel - So as for I can eat tem!

Another awesome thing he said today as we were having lunch. Samuel was sitting next to Stacia and leaned over to take a crouton (which he loves).

Samuel - Yoink!

And here is a cool piture of Samuel asleep that Stacia took the afternoon she came home from camp. After a week away she was too excited to not see him. Notice the toes around the bars.

Thanks Brekke

Brekke Sjoblom donated a CD of family photos at the RS service auction. I was the highest bidder - those Ebay skills totally paid off. Here's a few - thanks Brekke. She did a wonderful job!

Detective Work

In "Never Sniff a Gift Fish," Pat McManus has a story about "The Man Who Notices Things." The man's name is Fenton Quagmire. hilarious. In elementary school Pat remembers the teacher asking "Who noticed anything different about our room today?" She never called on any of the girls, of course, since it is well known that girls notice things. After calling on all the other boys, who notice nothing new, she finally gets to Fenton who points out some piddling detail like the cloakroom wall being knocked down, or all the chairs facing a different direction, or the teacher is dressed up like Woody Woodpecker. In my younger days I developed this into a running joke that I wanted to be a detective when I grew up, because they "notice things." Recently I had this great detective experience:

My great-grandfather Stephen Rudolph had a brother, Joseph, who wasn't listed in the county birth records. So in the 1940's his sister Victoria filed an affidavit that she was there when he was born. She also used as backup his baptism certificate from Holy Cross Church. The interesting thing was that she said he was the 10th child, not the 9th as my records indicated. I wrote to the church asking if there were any other children of Jacob and Maria Rudolph born/baptized in x, y, z years. I gave the gaps between siblings where there were 9 months or more between births. The priest sent me a list of all of the baptism dates and sure enough, there was the missing child, John. There was a 3 year gap between Stephen (child #4) and Victoria (allegedly child #5, but actually #6). John was born 10 months before Victoria. Another brother named John was born in 1901, suggesting that the first John died before 1901. I called the county and they had no birth or death record on John #1. I have written again to the church looking for his death info buthaven't heard back yet. Anyway, good news, eh? This was so exciting and fun for me to make this discovery! I felt like I was waiting for my grades to come out as I waited to hear back from the church, except maybe there was less fear involved.

Number 4

Samuel's latest pool activity is holding onto the pool edge and going around and around the perimeter. Last night when he came to the 4 ft depth, he pointed to the number 4 and said "Gordon!" Then he came to the 3 ft 6 inch depth and pointed to the number 6 he said "Percy!" I guess we will continue to encourage this train obsession if it's helping a two-year old learn his numbers.

Allow me to introduce you to...

Scott Westerfeld. Move over Shannon Hale - he's my new favorite author. I've read three of his books in the past three days. (I read three last year and loved them too.) And yeah! There's still more...

Tally-wa! (Read his books, you'll understand.)

All done

Here mom, take this away now that I've bitten all the frosting off.
Also note his new haircut - not bad for my third try on a moving target.

Playdough

Samuel played for hours on 3 consecutive days. I tried to avoid mixing colors, but my attention span wasn't as good as his.

Cake anyone?

This is how I found out that Samuel was able to open the fridge. He came to me hugging the cake Isaac's mommy left us. I guess that's not the best hiding place anymore.

Fun Day with Jen & Mason

While Joseph was in El Paso all last week, we went up to Spring and spent the a day and night and a 1/2 day with the Hoyts. Jen took us to the Children's Museum at The Woodlands Mall (and got us in for free - Thanks Jen!). Samuel loved the trains, sand, and the rubber pit where you can use construction equipment to dig for what else but dinosaur bones. Mason buried his giraffe in the sand.

See the scarf blower that entertained Samuel for these 49 seconds.

The boys had fruit and chocolate ice cream for dinner (as seen on Samuel's shirt).
